Highlights of our Two-Daughter Week!

Elspeth on the bed watching us get ready in the morning.

El and Maeve getting to know each other ... It's called a bottle, kid sis.

Mind if I borrow the bottle, big sis?

Borrow what-eva you like, xiao mei mei!

Hey, there's no bottles in there, little El!

Elspeth's so funny she's cast a spell over me!

I so want to feed her that myself, Mom.

Can Jie Jie Maeve feed me, Aba-mama? Maeve promises she won't spill anything on the bed.

Here you go, mei mei of mine.

Meanwhile, Baba tries once again to get info out to family and friends far away ...

... And next morning, Kath tries to read her email to El---good luck getting anything on your new netbook, Mom. Windows 7 has cast you back to the Bronze Age!

Escaping from Bronze Age frustrations, Mama and El visit a Nanchang museum for a bit of Jiangxi history.

Then we revisit a place with a more personal history ... Here is the very spot where we first laid eyes on our Maeve---and saw her foster sisters Kennedy and Claire, and her Xinyu sister Ava. What wonderful memories we have of the lobby of this Nanchang government building!

Upstairs in the same building, on the very floor where Maeve was handed over to us, we run into the very same orphanage nanny who brought Maeve from Xinyu, and placed her in Kath's arms ... That's the Xinyu nanny on the left. The odds of meeting her in Nanchang, far from her home, were quite small indeed!

A happy coincidence ... And we had on us a picture of her handing Maeve to Kath, and she was absolutely astonished and delighted when we pulled it out to show her!

After receiving our beautiful El on Sunday, we knew this trip to Jiangxi held one more unforgettable day in store for us:

A daylong trip to Xinyu to rendezvous with the foster mother who looked after Maeve from the time she was ten days old until the day she joined our family. Meeting her in person was a moving and amazing experience. What a wonderful woman, so full of life, laughter, cheerfulness, kindness ... One of the most gentle, affectionate, loving souls we've ever met.

Just look at her smile! Our Maeve is just as full of life and joyfulness, and no doubt that's partially Maeve's innate personality ... But surely she was influenced by having this woman as her first tender mom!

Maeve was a little nervous meeting her, a little overwhelmed. But she consented to climbing into foster mom's hungry arms ... The woman was reaching out to her, calling 'Cai Ling!' from the first moment she saw her. She regaled us with memories of Maeve and her foster sisters.

It was a beautiful and sad meeting ... Over the ninety minutes we were with this woman, it was clear she had difficulty keeping from scooping up our daughter and hugging her for all she was worth.

Just before we departed the Xinyu orphanage where the meeting took place---the same orphanage which Maeve was sent to for transfering to a foster family---the girl who was once Cai Ling, the long-gone foster daughter, gave her loving Jiangxi Mama a kiss goodbye.

Outside the orphanage, time for one last pic with the woman we'll never forget, never be able to thank enough. The banner draped over the entrance to the orphanage reads "Welcome back Yu Cai Ling" ... And when we first drove in through the orphanage's gate, fireworks were set off in Maeve's honour, and a pair of drummers began drumming on huge drums. Maeve was astonished, and so were we, naturally!

Note how even at the end, foster Mom could not take her eyes from Maeve. El, meanwhile, was being held by our guide, Helen, who arranged the whole head-spinning emotional day for us. Thank you so much, Helen!

After retracing the route our daughter and her foster sisters had taken from Xinyu to Nanchang, peering out the windows all the way and thinking how long and confusing that journey must have been on the Xinyu sisters, we settle back into our Gloria Grand hotel digs for a relaxing night.

Baba Pat and Elspeth at play on the bed together.

El loves to be tickled by a bit of Baba neck-blowing, just as her jie jie Maeve does!

Well everyone, we depart the Gloria Grand for the airport tomorrow at noon. Next stop, Beijing ... And early next week, the Great Wall and Forbidden City with our Jiangxi girls!

So goodnight and goodbye to all from Mama Kathleen and her youngest daughter :)

SHE IS SMILING! i KNEW she'd be smiling in NO time - how could she help not smiling with such an infectious abundance of giggles and laughter as is our Maevey and with two loving new parents who adore her? She is EXQUISITE!!! Soooo moving to see the reunion with her foster mama - she can clearly see that her foster daughter has such a wonderful life in your loving arms in Canada with us! It must have been such a Joy for this woman to see that and see her Cai Ling so happy and well adjusted and thriving! Her Mei Mei is sooooo beautiful - what a SMILE! She is already happy clearly to be part of this wonderful family of four. I am crying to see you and Kath holding your daughters finally - you SOOOOO deserve each other - all four of you - AMAZING!!! What a happy happy day! Congratulations Kathleen, Pat, and Maeve. And welcome Elspeth! I can see from these pictures that the sisters have already formed a bond.

We had been talking about Elspeth's adoption with Owen ahead of the big day, showing him on the map the flight path to China. He woke up on 'gotcha day' and said, "Today is a very important day in the world. Kathleen and Pat are getting a new baby and I'm going to a bowling party!" Truly a special day.

I can't wait to show the kids your pictures.

Enjoy your time together.

Cheers,

Sarah

Oh, that last picture of Kathleen and El is stunning. That sweet little smile of El's must warm your heart so much.

And wow, I'm nearly speechless about Maeve's meeting with the girls' foster mother. Reading this part of your post brought tears to my eyes but also happy smiles, especially about how warmly Maeve was welcomed - with a banner and fireworks! As the mother of Maeve's foster sister, I look forward to hearing more about the foster mother and this particular leg of your journey in the coming months as you find time. But already, what you've shared with us is a huge treasure. Thank you for doing this journey; I know you did it for your daughter but our daughter also benefits hugely.

Much love,

Monica, Paul, Claire and Ren

Elspeth looks absolutely adorable and Maeve looks like she's doing a wonderful job welcoming her to the family.

(I have to admit I've been a little impatient over the last couple of days, refreshing your blog every five minutes to see if anything new has been posted. Definitely worth the wait though...)

Can't wait to meet Elspeth and to see the whole family in person.

I love the sister pics. It warms my heart to see the girls together, and see that they're already bonding.

The visit with Maeve's foster mom sounds wonderful. The photos are very emotional--I can only imagine being there in person. You can see how meaningful this visit was to Maeve's foster mom. What a gift for everyone involved. I want to hear all about Xinyu another time too.

What a coincidence to run into Maeve's nanny! And the fact that you had a photo of Maeve's Gotcha Day to show her is amazing. Wow. Isn't that a Xinyu director in the photo? I'm pretty sure that's the woman who handed Caia to me on Gotcha Day.

What an incredible few days for all of you. I look forward to hearing from you in Beijing.

I love to see the photos of Maeve and Elspeth together, they were obviously mean to be sisters! El looks pretty happy to have her baba kissing her neck and the photo of Kath and Elspeth says it all. You all look so incredibly happy!

I can't even imagine the emotions you must have felt meeting Maeve's foster mother. Even just reading about it from the other side of the world made me cry -- I was so thrilled for all of you to hear how Maeve was welcomed by her. It must give you a feeling of peace knowing Maeve was so well taken care of and loved for the first 10 months of her life. What a precious gift.

And the welcome for Maeve at the orphanage must have made her feel like the little queen she is!

Here is a poem that Elspeth will never ever ever forget: one birdie two birdie three birdie four, i think there is more. five six seven eight. i think it's getting really late. xoxo because she'll love little birdies flying around. To Elspeth: This is so special for you on this day. You're my cousin and i'm your big cousin. You'll have a fun time with your new family. And have a happy happy fun time. I love you. xoxoxoxo

From Miller: Dear Elspeth, I hope you have a happy time with your new family. They are really nice. I'm your cousin. And my name is Miller. And I am seven years old. You are going to be one of the nicest cousins I've ever had. I saw your pictures and it's great that you and Maeve are sisters. I love you Elspeth. xoxoxoxoxoxo
To Pat & Kathleen: The pictures were awesome. And I love that Maeve was trying to be nice to Elspeth, especially on the diaper part when she tried to help do it herself. Have a happy trip back and I'm hoping to see Elspeth soon and we've got books for her. Bye - see you soon. xoxo
